Hello fellow lactnetters,
Was having a great day expecially in NICU where two of the babies I saw
decided it was time to breastfeed (both for the first time). Then I read
Jan Bargers's post about the woman's doctor recommending solids to slow
the wgt gain of the breastfeed infant. My first reaction was....what do
you mean slow the wgt gain?
Am beginning to feel we can't win -
if the baby is not gaining wgt - the first suggestion is to supp - and
more often than not formula is used because they think Mom is too tired to
pump!
now if the baby is gaining too much wgt - again introduce something else -
My question is.....has anyone proven there is such a thing as too much wgt
gain whilst exclusively breastfeeding - maybe that is where we need to
focus our energies...
my own personal experience was a breastfed baby who gained a pound a week
for the first five weeks of her life....and when I questioned my doctor
about it...thank goodness he was very supportive and suggested I continue
because obviously whatever I was feeding her was agreeing with her and she
was thriving.
Sorry guess I am feeling a little discouraged - seems like every time we
take a step forward there is someone there to pull us back two steps.

Mary-Jane
