Malka:
I am currently nursing an avid thumb-sucking 2 year old. I too thought it
would be a good idea (when she was a newborn) to put her to the breast
whenever she was sucking her thumb. This was pretty much a losing battle,
though as babies can suck their thumbs a lot! At night, we co-slept and
I'd even take her thumb out of her mouth to nurse her if she was awake. I
have several other friends, whose babies sometimes even prefer their thumb
to the breast-- but they are gaining fine and the mothers have no supply
problems. I guess it's a phase just like everything else. Eventually,
she'll grow out of it. For now, I'm not sweating it. Tell this mom it can
be a blessing when her baby might get fussy waiting for her, like on a car
trip in her car seat, or while waiting on her for a few moments while she is
taking care of another child!
