Subject: [LACTNET] Infant Formula Marketing Materials
Kim has reminded us of the crushing amount of infant formula marketing
materials that are bombarding our new mothers. Even though the Code per se
is not
legislated in the USA, there is a way to report these slimy marketing
practices. Anyone can file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission
regarding
false and misleading advertising. Their webiste is _www.ftc.gov_
(http://www.ftc.gov) where they have an on-line complaint form. I have
talked with the FTC
and found out that this agency typically does nothing about issues like
ours
until there are hundreds of complaints. If the majority of people on
Lactnet
flooded the FTC with complaints regarding specific marketing materials,
plus
asked the mothers they work with to do the same, we might catch the
attention of this agency. NABA continues to catalog Code violations and
will be
conducting its third Code training workshop July 1-2 at the La Leche League
conference in Washington, DC. We are chipping away at aspects of Code
violations
but could use some of the collective Lactnet voices to help the FTC
understand
the scope of the problem.
