Hi everyone. This scanning Lactnet is getting to be a habit. I just wanted to offer a comment on the DHA supplement question.
DHA supplementation does affect infant neurological development according to this recent well designed randomized controlled trial:
Maternal Supplementation With Very-Long-Chain n-3 Fatty Acids During
Pregnancy and Lactation Augments Children’s IQ at 4 Years of Age

The study demonstrated higher IQ at 4 years of age when mothers were given DHA supplements during the last trimester of pregnancy and the first 3 months of lactation. This does not directly address the question of supplementation during breastfeeding, since a high proportion of DHA is deposited during the last trimester of pregnancy. Maternal DHA in pregnancy is very likely far more significant that DHA in human milk. However, the two go together.
I think it is important to remember is that this data reflects changes in MEAN scores for the groups. It does not mean that all children will benefit if their mothers increase their DHA intake.
