I I would like to add my experiences with aspiring LCs looking for
experience. I have had LLL leaders, doulas, childbirth educators, ped
office nurses call me. I love to mentor. It is a wonderful way to keep me
excited about the field. These women often call with interesting questions,
cases etc. Sometimes I give advice, sometimes I refer to a resource etc.To
work in the homevisit issue, they often call with a client in mind. They
then request perrmision to made the vist with me after giving the client the
info about referring to me. Who a woman has at her visit is up to her. I am
not the one asking if a student is OK etc. They do not come with me but come
on their own. The scheduling takes place between me and the client. The
client then can call the student to inform about time etc. This has been a
wonderful bridge to some of the office RNs. After my visit, they can follow
up in their office. The ped practice benefits and so do I. There have been
some pitfalls. In the areas of confidentiality. I have had a few visits
where once the visit starts, the client was uncomfortable with the sharing
of info (breast implants, meds for depression etc). The carefullly listening
student relialized the situation and quiety excusesd herself to call in at
her office or some other excuse to leave the room. It is imperitive that the
client knows her privacy will be respected.
Then there are the aspiring LCs who call , want to make visits with me
and are expecting me to arrange for everything. I don't do this. Maybe if
there was a more formal program, I would think about it. But I have a lot to
accomplish in my initial telephone contact. Getting informed concent for a
student is not one of them. I spend hours on the phone answering questions,
referring to resources etc. for any aspiring LC. I have had these new LCs
come to my home to see my forms, examine the equipment I carry, use books
from my library. It is NOT that we LCs are trying to keep other LCs from
practicing. We don't have a lot of extra time on our hands to take on every
student who wants experience. One clever student has been volunteering for
WIC. They were thrilled to have her. Another, asked her own ped. if she
could help women in his practice with breastfeeding. When appropriate, she
referred to me and came out on the visit. All the while educating her ped.
about the field of lactation consultation. This was a win-win for all. This
ped has become a staunce supporter of lactation consultants AND he really
understands the importance of an IBCLC! Good luck to all. Ann Anderson
