Diane, thank you for sharing Jack's story. So much is
in the details. I sometimes think it is the lucky mom
whose baby "communicates" so well that breastfeeding
gets a thoughtful evaluation. If only everyone in a
mother's path knew to look at the breastfeeding
itself.
As you say:
<<I talk often, at conferences, about how important
the process (breastfeeding) is, despite our keen focus
on the product (breastmilk).
Jack seems to be proof that sometimes the process can
make all the difference. Jack - pure and simple - is
a baby who needed to breastfeed.>>
For all the chatter about the "product" of human milk,
it's the breastfeeding that has to work for mothers
and babies to share milk. And when the flow is
interrupted, for any reason, this is exactly what
mothers say: "Breastfeeding didn't work for me."
We are increasingly aware there is much more to learn
about milk. Sharing stories increases our awareness
there is much more to learn about breastfeeding. It
may be more difficult to "research" breastfeeding
itself than the milk, but perhaps this is where the
bigger mysteries lie.
Welcoming and empowering a wide range of vision in the
lactation field, rather than constraining our growth,
may be key to helping all our babies breastfeed.
