Courtney:
This is an excellent topic, especially with the big push on it today. One
problem with most of the research out there is that it seems to consider
formula feeding the norm and breastfeeding the "experiment". Note the
following quotes from your post:
"breastfeeding reduced the risk of children becoming overweight"
"breastfeeding was a significant protective factor against children becoming
overweight"
"benefits of breastfeeding to prevent childhood overweight"
Preferably these would be stated:
"Formula feeding increased the risk of children becoming overweight"
"Formula feeding was a significant risk factor for children becoming
overweight"
"Risks of formula feeding for contributing to childhood overweight"
(personally I would be tempted to say "causing" rather than "contributing
to" but of course there are other factors)
Makes a big difference in how one views the results doesn't it? Of course,
when you are quoting an article, you can't change the wording within the
quote, but you could add the better wording as your own in parentheses (or
whatever the current accepted style is).
