All in a days work, ....I bet this sounds way too familiar, way too often:
New mom of four day old baby to LC at a group session; "the baby was
latching and feeding but at two days of age the baby was so fussy and hungry, I was
not getting any sleep so I called the pediatrician who said to give her
formula, so we gave her a bottle which worked like a charm, but then the next day
she refused to breastfeed, ...so how can I get her to breastfeed again?"
LC who decided to be bold and casually ask: "what was the pediatrician's
answer to that question?"
New mom: "oh, I called the breastfeeding office and they said to come here"
LC: "well it would be interesting to get the doctor's advice since the
single recommendation he offered was to give formula, ....in the meantime we'll
come up with a plan...."
LC to group: "does this scenario sound familiar to anyone? ......what do you
suggest ladies?"
Group to new mom: many good suggestions, except did not get to the "change
doc" advice ...........LC did not offer that obvious suggestion as new mom was
somewhat fragile during group, ......... very pleased with help and support.
Next week, LC to group: " Ladies, if you wanted to find a new doctor for
your baby, how would you go about that?"
