Hello everyone,
Interesting thread about how breastfeeding is referred to in different
languages. My 0.02 cents are on how we call it in Argentina. I am not brave
enough to say "this is how it is said in Spanish" because Spanish is spoken
in many different countries, with different "flavor".
The "elegant" words for "to breastfeed" are "amamantar" or "dar el pecho"
(give the breast). Informally, we say "dar la teta". I don't know whether
"teta" (informal word for breast, but not slang) is inappropriate in other
Spanish speaking countries.
Mother's milk is translated as "leche materna" (maternal milk?). Babies
"maman" (formal), "toman el pecho" (or "toman la teta"), that is "take the
breast". "Chupar la teta" (suck the breast) is used less frequently and is
less polite.
Word for a "feed" (at the breast) is "mamada" (and I KNOW this is not
polite in some other countries) or "toma" (used less frequently).
We use "teta" all over the place. No eyebrows raised. In any case, there's
so much derogatory slang to refer to the breasts nowadays, that "teta" has
almost become an academic word.
