I stopped using only one bottle type recently. Instead, I use what is
needed for the individual baby based on mouth size and issue. For most, Dee's
'straight nipple' method works just fine. I find babies are quite smart and if
they are having issues with their tongue the playtex natural latch I have
seen lately is not a good plan...they can push that nipple right inside the
wider base. They can chew it and twist it. Actually, quite interesting to watch
them. Maybe they used to be firmer, but now they are very soft. Avent I
haven't liked in years because it is just too firm and the little babies really
can't get their mouths far enough down to the base anyway and the idea of
slow flow seems to have escaped them. I even find that with some of the little
4 lb babies their mouths are very wide when all the way down on the regular
straight nipples if they are to the collar. I haven't seen the newer comfi's
but I will be looking for them.
I think the method is more important than the nipple. Slow paced feeding,
waiting for that open mouth even for the bottle. What I wish for is longer
nipples so they will be where the mother's nipple belongs, a slightly wider
base but not so wide it tries to 'look' like the breast since it won't
function as one (soft, pliable, molding, etc.)--just wide enough to keep those lips
from pursing but not so wide it displaces the tongue and a real slow flow
that only responds to sucking.
Take care,
