Lactation consultants are very knowlegeable and know how to help the women
that they are able to come in contact with but for very one there are
probably 10 that could have been helped but fell through the cracks. I see
this at work everyday. I was fortunate enough to have a first born who was
a super nurser. If I had not had that experience, I would have blamed my
body for for not doing what it was supposed to. If I wasn't a committed
breastfeeder, I would have switched to formula as recommended by my
pediatrician because my 2 week old was still losing weight. This actually
happened with my 2nd born who was a very poor nurser for the first 2 months.
This was a turning point in my life when I realized that breastfeeding
isn't what it is cracked up to be. It can be hard even for those who have
no risk factors. It is such a fragile relationship that if you don't get
help when you need it, you'll probably lose it.
