Hi Pam. I use finger feeding in situations where the baby will not or
cannot take enough at breast to grow, or in other extenuating
circumstances. It is not a first line, obviously, but one tool in a bag
of tools that I pull out when I need it. This is way different, to my
way of thinking, than "suck training," which I am not really sure about.
I have asked in the past about suck training, and have really never
gotten a full picture of what that is.
In my practice, finger feeding, as a possible tool, is a lot better than
giving up on breastfeeding all together....which is what happens a lot
around here. Finger feeding is within the scope of my practice as a
nurse and IBCLC. Suck training is something I would not profess to know
about, and would not be something I would do as an IBCLC, but that's
just me.
Sigh.
