I never met Ned, and couldn't pick him out from a pile of
archaeologists. I understand he was only 64, when I had thought him to be
well over a hundred considering his accomplishments. I had corresponded
with him over the past few years on numerous subjects, and I always learned
far more that I could have ever imagined.

Ned was instrumental in the early researches in Chesterfield Co., VA, where
I now work. Only a month or so ago I received all of his notes and photos
for his research on Bermuda Hundred, which is the oldest continually
occupied English community in North America. His work on this important
site was incredible, but not enough to get a NR nomination past the lawyers
of the giant industry that owns much of the property. His work was
expanded by Dan Mouer, but that also did not lead to a NR
nomination. Working with the VA DHR we are now in hopes of getting a
district with the most important of the archaeological sites
included. Ned's encouragement and cooperation from so far (decades and
miles) has been a great assistance and perhaps now is the time to finally
get this done in his honor.
