Catherine writes: "the day the
dog eats the shield is the day the baby will latch without it".
Boy does that hit home. That is what apparently happened about a year after
I became a IBCLC. I had given a mom a shield with instructions and one
evening she called in a panic that she couldn't find the shield-thought the
dog had eaten it. She wanted me to bring her one on my way home from work.
So at midnight on a below zero night I was at her door with a new shield and
yes she had latched the baby without it. So since then I always have added
"watch were you put it so the dog doesn't eat it" but Catherine I like your
quote much better. BTW-this mom is now breastfeeding her fourth child and
does each at least a year. Have a good day everyone, Mary Ann RN, IBCLC in
central WI
