I am wondering what are some of the questions we should be asking when
mothers report a low milk supply--especially when they are right. I have a list
of questions already, but when all the answers give no clue where the milk
went, I am wondering what pieces I may be missing. On day two baby had only lost
4 oz. (7lbs 15 oz to start) Mom had her milk 'in' on day 3, full and
uncomfortable, nursed well, and by next day was fine, baby gained appropriately in
the first week, acceptable in the second, and now she is needing to use
formula. Baby is latching well, sucks well, transfers an ounce sometimes a bit
over, and then mom is unable to express any more. Until a few days before she
saw me, she was changing appropriate diaper amounts, baby was eating and
content every couple of hours, woke a few times at night, etc. Typical normal
newborn eating pattern--then, one day, it changed. The only factor that
changed: Her mother came to visit and told her she would not have enough
milk--because she didn't have any for her. Every time the baby cried, grandma said,
see, no milk. Even after the doctor visit with an 8 oz gain in 7 days, mom
said, if you had more milk he would have gained more! Is it really possible
that those comments could set mom up to produce less milk? I realize some
women do not make enough milk, and goodness knows I see my share of them, but
there is always an underlying reason of some kind that we can figure out. Not
this time. There does not seem to be any physical reason for the change.
Thinking I need to add more questions to my already long history form.
Thanks for any ideas of what else to ask,
