Are you perhaps looking for Goldenseal?. Hydrastis canadensis L- which is often combined with echinacea and propolis in cold/flu preps and is generally NOT recommended during pregnancy but not clearly defined for (early) lactation although the midwifery practice I work with uses it topically for cord care. Golden root, aka Oregon graperoot- Berberis aquifolium, B. nervosa, Mahonia spp.
as Katie pointed out is a more palatable alternative, but not the same herb as golden seal root. Both taste and smell similar and contain berberine.
