Something I like about the Weston A. Price site is that the authors include
references for their statements. It's very informative to compare their
statements with their source materials.
For example, in the article at
<http://www.westonaprice.org/children/breastfeed.html#4>, it's stated that
"A study from Norway found that breastfeeding did not provide protection
against frequent ear infections." That sounds alarming unless one actually
checks the source: a report on upper respiratory infections in 4-year-old
children. Parents were asked about their children's history of upper
respiratory infections and earaches in the preceding year. Breastfeeding
history was included in the analysis. It is not clear from the abstract
whether any of the children breastfed during the study period.
Another statement: "A report in Pediatric Clinics of North America noted
that many breastfed babies suffer from failure-to-thrive and dehydration."
Further: "The author warned: 'Those who enthusiastically promoted
breastfeeding for its many health benefits must confront the reality of
breastfeeding failure and implement necessary changes in medical education
and support services to foster successful outcomes in breastfed infants.'"
The author being quoted here is Marianne Neifert and the report is the one
in which she addresses problems encountered by a small, very specific
population, namely women who have primary lactation failure.
I could go on and on. Suffice to say, it's good to take a hard look at the
references.
regards,
Julia
