Please say a prayer or send good thoughts to my Lactation course students
from the Cayman Islands. Hurricane Ivan scored a nearly direct hit on Grand
Cayman, and early news reports indicate that the islands are severely
damaged. One midwife evacuated to Miami with her family just before all
flights were cancelled. I don't know if the others are still on the island
or have evacuated. There are two hospitals on Grand Cayman - one public, one
private - and both were striving toward implementing Baby-Friendly and
Mother-Friendly practices. Collectively, about 500 babies are born on Grand
Cayman each year.
Also send prayers and good thoughts to the mothers and babies on the Cayman
Islands and other places where hurricanes have destroyed so much the past
few weeks. Babies who are not being breastfed are at great risk during
natural disasters.
