A problem I can't seem to solve. From a frequent lurker. Mom gave
permission to post.
Baby boy is exclusively breastfed at 4 1/2 months and mom states that
problems began about 1 month ago. She describes "serious, sharp, jabbing jolts" of
pain in the left breast from beginning of feeding and sometimes lasting an
hour after feeding. She also noted blanching of the nipple after feed. This
pain occurs primarily at night feedings. No signs of thrush in baby. No
problems with right breast. She does note when pumping that the right breast has
milk spraying out, but on the left it "kinda clumps out to the side."
In brainstorming, I thought of yeast, vasospasm, or clogged ducts. She has
tried heat to the affected breast with no improvement, but only tried for a
few days. She is now cutting way down on saturated fat, as she noted the pain
seemed worse after a day of fast food. She is adding lecithin now, but has
not noted improvement yet. How long would an improved diet be expected to
take to improve clogged ducts?
Would it be helpful to try the special nipple ointment, even though the pain
is only one side. Yeast would affect both sides, wouldn't it?
This mom is becoming extremely discouraged, but wants badly to continue
breastfeeding as she has excema and a family history of allergies. But the pain
is really starting to get to her. Any new ideas or advice would be
appreciated. Reply to the list or personally.
