I looked over the study very quickly and saw this:
From the study: "We used a 2x2 factorial design to test (a) an oral powder,
either Lactobac (containing Lactobacillus rhamnosus and Bifidobacterium
longum) or placebo (malto-dextrin powder) and (b) a vaginal pessary, either
Femilac (containing L rhamnosus, L delbrueckii, L acidophilus, and
Streptococcus thermophilus) or placebo (maltodextrin). Active treatments and
placebos were identical in appearance. Participants took half a teaspoon of
powder twice daily 20 minutes before meals and one pessary at night for 10
days (during the six day antibiotic course and for four days after)."

What I understand is that the cultures in the average yogurt found in the
grocery store do not survive digestion. What is also needed is enough
cultures in each capsule. I have heard that at least 1 billion LIVE cultures
per capsule are necessary and to be taken three times a day. Some brands say
take on an empty stomach. Plus, you want a probiotic that has plenty of
differing intestinal cultures not just one. For example, I have two bottle
of probiotics in my refrigerator. One brand cost me $30 for 180 capsules
with 1.5 billion live cells per capsule (L. acidophilus, B. bifidum and B.
longum). The other bottle cost me $20 for 90 capsules with 1 billion live
cells per capsule (L.casei, L. plantanum, L. salvarius, L.acidophilus, S.
thermophilus, B.bifidum, B. infantis, B. longum, and B. breve). A doctor on
a local radio show advises people to take another brand that has 2 billion
live cells three times a day and give up all sugars and carbohydrates for a
short time to eliminate yeast. I have seen a cheap drugstore brand that had
one culture and only 40,000 per hard caplet, didn't say if live or what.
Another thing that jumped out at me was the women were only doing this for
10 days and while on antibiotics. I have also been told that one should take
probiotics for a month after candida symptoms cease. I am not familiar with
either product mentioned in the study, though.

Very interesting, thanks for posting this to all of us. Kathy Eng, BSW,
