Jan, no research to cite, but one anecdote of many:
Running bf support meetings for years I've seen my
share of sumo babies. So have many on this list, I'm
sure. I called a family I know & asked them to pull
the baby book. Baby boy was born full-term at 9# 7oz
/ 20.5 inches. At his 3 month checkup he was 19.7#
and 26.25 inches. Today he is 8 yrs old, tall & lean
& on the charts. Both parents are tall.
This baby was typical of the big breastfeeding babies
I see: exclusively breastfed, no pacifier. Curiously,
most of the big babies I've had the pleasure to watch
over time have been in no hurry for solids.
If the research on this specific issue isn't quite
"in" yet, perhaps a litany of anecdotes would be of
interest to both mother and physician.
The practice of breastfeeding various considerably. I
would like to see case studies on the breastfeeding
experiences of unusually sized babies. More to the
point, we need to be quite clear about definitions of
"breastfeeding" that go well beyond "exclusive" or
"not" before we worry individual mothers and children
with charts and other limiting devices so early in the
history of lactation research.
All anecdotes aside, if something is truly "wrong,"
it's not necessarily the breastfeeding.
(If anyone runs a creamatocrit, Jan, we'll all be
interested!)
