Great discussion thread!

In response to the original question: a good answer would be in the line of
"of course any supplementation would be with the mother's own milk, or
second choice pasteurized donor human milk from a milk bank. I'd base the
decision on a thorough review of feeding patterns and how effectively the
baby is nursing, verified with pre-and post-feed weight checks."

I'd be tempted to ask if the pediatrician had breastfed her own babies, and
for how long. I'd ask the ped for names of several local LLL Leaders and
Lactation consultants that the Ped has worked closely with in the past few
months (and follow up with a call to those people). I'd also ask what
breastfeeding training / education courses / conference sessions on BF the
ped had attended in the last two years, and whether he or she has a copy of
the latest Lawrence and Hale books on their shelves.

I'd also like to ask the physicians on this list - what would YOU want your
patients to ask so you could brag about your BF-management and BF support
skills/services?
