I am somewhat amused with the various means suggested for knowing which
breast to start on for a feed. I never did understand the sew-on slides
that LLLI was selling. I wonder if many actually did get sold. If the
subject came up in class or in talking with a mom I would usually say that
several methods have been used (safely pin on the bra strap, rubber band on
the wrist, etc.). However, most moms find, after a while, that they can't
remember whether or not they moved the marker! At that point, moms tend to
use the "scale method". In other words, whichever breast feels
fuller/heavier is the one baby gets first.

As with any "gadget", there are times when it might be appropriate to be
certain a mom does not unintentionally use the same breast 2 times in a row,
but for most moms, a much more relaxed approach works just fine. If we
start giving out too many "rules", some moms will just decide breastfeeding
is too complicated and bottle feeding easier!
