I teach prenatal classes (childbirth, prenatal, newborn care, breastfeeding)
When parents are choosing a pediatrician I suggest the ask how many of their
clients plan to breastfeed. Then ask how many of them actually do
breastfeed. And finally ask how many are still breastfeeding at 6 months or
one year. If it is a doctor who is really supportive of breastfeeding,
regardless of their numbers, they will give answers that reflect their
support... such as... "6 months? Do people really nurse that long in this
country?" ( sorry, my sad attempt at humor!)

I also recommend that they talk with the nurse and any parents in the
waiting room that seem interested in discussion. It is helpful to talk with
patients if possible and ask what the parent really likes about the doctor
or practice. Sometimes what one person likes is what another person would
not like.
