Dear Katherine Dettwyler:
I hear your frustration and plea loud and clear - the frustration of being
mis-quoted and not credited with the hard work you did has to be ENORMOUS! I
hope you will get a quick and positive response.
This also reminds us all to CHECK OUR FACTS and when someone quotes someone
else - make sure we have the right information. It is time-consuming to
check the references referred to, but necessary.
Whenever possible - get the original article or write to or call the person
directly, asking what was the REAL information.
This can be a lesson both in written and oral communication. How many times
I've been told my a mother "the doctor/WIC nutritionist/nurse said..." and I
get all "uppity" only to learn later that the doctor/WIC nutritioninst/nurse
never said that - at least not in the way it was implied/heard by the mom.
(I was told a WIC staffer had told a mom to use a needle to get the milk
out! Luckily I knew the person and found it was a neighbor by the same
name!)
