Dr Jack says babies typically gain and ounce per day for first couple of mo, then slow to 1/2 oz per day for mo 3-6, doubling birth weight by 6 mo of age. BF Answer Book says average is 6 oz/week and baby weighs about 2 1/2 times birth weight by one year. By age 2 there doesn't appear to be any differences between BF and bottle fed babies.

One of my ped text says 5-7 oz /week, double birth weight by 6 mo. 3-5 oz/week for 6-12 mo and triple birth weight by 1 year. Sorry I don't have a premie ref handy at home, but from clinical practice, I'd guess I see similar weight gains in premies.

The dr may be looking for "catch-up" growth for these premies. But I think 1 pound is extreme (approx 1/2 kilo)

Sincerely, Pat in SNJ
