To answer the question posed above:

The study included 20 cases.  18% of these were recent immigrants to Canada.
66% were of Middle Eastern or Black descent.  1 was of Inuit origin living
in far north Ontario.  The ethnicity for the remainder was unknown.

None were fair-skinned.  60% were dark skinned, 40% were intermediate skin
colour.

47% of the mothers were veiled during and following pregnancy.

All were breastfed, except one case where breastfeeding status was unknown.

11% of moms received Vitamin D during pregnancy.

75% of mothers did not drink milk postnatally.


Part of the Conclusions state:

"A subset of residents in Canada are particulary at risk for nutritional
rickets, including dark-skinned, breastfed infants whose mother's adhere to
a diet that is low in Vitamin D and limited sun exposure."

(Janice here - given the above - why would we supplement all infants- when
the infants at risk for this seems to be a very specific subset of the
population?  And why don't we supplement the moms, instead?)
