I was very saddened to see that the creators of Sesame Street, who
historically have tried to encourage diversity even before PC was chic,
aren't up to speed on bf.
My 16 month old son and I were watching an "Elmo's World: Babies and
Animals" DVD that someone had given us. One of the segments (animated)
showed that a baby's mouth has 3 positions: happy, crying, and happy/full,
and the way to turn a baby's mouth from crying to happy/full is to stick a
bottle in it (eeeek.) In several of the live shots, they showed babies and
toddlers in strollers drinking from bottles.
But here's the saddest part: then they showed a live "trip to the farm"
sequence with baby animals. I was thinking, "This will be ironic -- they'll
show baby pigs, etc., suckling from the mama pig even though human babies
aren't shown doing that." But guess what? They showed the children feeding
baby pigs milk by bottle, and not a single sequence of the baby animals
feeding from the mamas!
I guess I'm really worried about what the next generation is going to think
of bf if we are teaching them that not only is bottle feeding the norm for
humans, but animals too!
