I have been working this evening on altered children's board books for our
WIC clients. When originally printed, these were board books meant for
children; as altered books, they are meant for the mothers who come into
WIC. I am following directions from online sites to prepare the books.
The most exciting part is that I get to write my own (simple) text. One is
"12 Risks of Formula" (because there are 12 pages). Another is "Ten Things
Moms Can Do To Keep Their Baby Safe" (guess how many pages in that one).
Some books are only 6 or 8 pages long. One could come up with a really
simple message.
When finished, I will seal the pages with gel medium so they can be wiped
clean. They are made with materials labeled non-toxic but will be kept with
moms' reading materials, not children's (so they won't be unnecessarily
chewed on). I might wind up keeping them on my desk. I don't think they
should be given to children, for safety reasons.
Just passing the idea on in case it sounds like fun to someone. Might be a
good idea for World Breastfeeding Week, in some context. I found
instructions by Googling "altered board books."
I disclaim responsibility for any safety issues I haven't thought of yet;
these are just fun instructional media for parents. I might wind up just
using them in a prenatal breastfeeding class where I'm sure no one will chew
on them.
