Hello,

I have a mom who REALLY wants to breastfeed her baby (I seem to have so
few who are as committed as this woman!!). Her baby girl was a 6lb, 13
oz 38 weeker and is 9 days old. Today she weighs 6-8. Never latched that
great. Mom has large, flat nipples. We have tried everything - 16mm
nipple shield, 20mm shield, breast shells, breast compression,
asymmetrical latch. The baby will ONLY latch with the SNS. The latch is
shallow.Baby cannot keep her mouth open wide enough to sustain effective
sucking, and closes down close the the nipple shaft.

Here is my question. Since this baby can latch with the SNS, and takes
an adequate amount of milk, should mother continue using the device, and
is there any hope that this baby will "grow into" the mother's
nipple/breast? I know, no guarantees of anything, but what I am looking
for is someone swho has experienced a mother who used an SNS long term
and eventually got her baby to latch without it.

Please e-mail me to let me know if you have had a mom use an SNS for an
extended period of time and come out successful. This mom is in tears
and really does not want to go down the route of bottle feeding just
yet.

Thanks,
Brenda Phipps, BS, IBCLC
