Brenda, I have definitely had moms use an SNS for much longer than a few
days and go on to exclusive breastfeeding. There are so many reasons this
baby might be doing better with an SNS right now - "near term" status alone
might explain it.

Catherine Watson Genna posted a couple days ago about a tight posterior
frenulum - is this a possibility?

How is mom's milk supply? Any red flags for impaired supply - PCOS sings,
assymetry, thyroid issues, etc.? One mom I worked with had marginal milk
supply - she was able to pump enough to use exclusive ebm in the SNS, no
formula, but baby couldn't get enough out at first to nurse exclusively
without the SNS. After about a month, with herbal galactagogues, pumping,
and ad lib nursing with SNS, the baby just yanked the tube away one day and
never went back.

I would focus on bolstering supply, if needed, feeding the baby at the
breast with the SNS - achieving the best latch possible, of course, and
assessing any possible causes of shallow latch - how about cranial sacral /
chiropractic evaluation?

mostly, though, i would reassure the mom that using the SNS does not mean
breastfeeding exclusively is a unattainable.

Best of luck!

Warmly,
