I once worked with a mother whose first BF experience had been absolutely
miserable.  It took several years before the child was diagnosed with an
autistic disorder, and mother was expecting again.  You can imagine how
loaded BF was for her.  It didn't help that other things happened to
necessitate NICU care for the new baby for several days either.
This mother described her early relationship to her firstborn by saying 'I
felt like there was a wall between us... that eye contact just never
happened' and I commented that there was indeed a wall, but it wasn't the
mother's wall.  She was a very strong person and despite all the agony she
experienced the first time around, she brought in an ample milk supply by
pumping the first few days, and intended to breastfeed the new baby.  The
new baby was very obliging with eye contact early on, thank goodness.
