With permission, I copy the following response from Dr. Cohen, author of
the new book which is causing such a furor.
"Dear Mrs Rice,
In response to your Email, I thought I would clarify my point of view.
I happen to respect the members of the lactation profession, at least
those of you who are earnest. But I have seen too many situations where
mothers were set into a panic, drained emotionally and financially by
unethical
lactation consultants.
I do believe that most of the breastfeeding problems are due to the
apprehension of doing it appropriately. My approach is to spend quite a
lot of my time reassuring mothers of their built-in ability to nurse.
When they need closer help , I refer them to a network of lactation
specialists who I trust . Like you , I encourage mother of twins to
uniquely breastfeed if possible .
The point of the chapter was not to infuriate the members of your
profession but rather to tell nursing mothers to be discriminative in who
they choose to help them.
Regards,
Michel Cohen."
