HMMM?! That's a difficult question to answer. I myself am an intern
looking for a mentor. I live in Suffolk County, Long Island and am having
a hard time finding a mentor. I've been on the phone practically every
day cold calling IBCLCs in New York and have not been successful. I had a
mentor for a little while but the mentoring stopped because she was ill
and she had alot of other interns. It's ALOT of work on the mentors part.
Another obstacle is that some IBCLCs feel that if they take an intern on
they are training and working with their competition.
This is the luck I have had so far and you might want to try the following
(for Rebbecca Rosen RN, BSN, CBC). I went to WIC in the Bronx, NY and met
with Barbara Zucker and her supervisor. They were going to mentor me as a
Volunteer but it was too far for me to travel so it didn't work out.
There is also the Well Care Center in Manhattan that has an internship
program that costs $1200. You can pay in two installments. I don't know
the details of the program yet. They are mailing me the information on
it. I personally am probably going to go with this.
I think you will have a better chance in finding a mentor because of your
professional background. You can also check into Clinical Placements at
hospitals. Well, I hope this has helped a little. I wish you best of
luck.
I feel that as lactation professionals we should try to help each other
out as best as possible. We would all probably agree that we need more
IBCLCs out there and there is a lack of them.
