I attended the ILCA conference and listened to Dr. Suzanne Haynes from
the Office of Women's Health explain how everything came about. There
was much research done on these images and ads including many focus
groups being used to find just the right thing to put into the ads.
Several of the attendees expressed their dislike and offered suggestions
just like I have read here. What Dr. Haynes told us was that the ads
are obviously not targeted to lactation professionals....the target
audience is first time moms who normally would not choose/decide to
breastfeed. Sooo, I am sure none of us on the listserve fit into the
mold of who would not typically breastfeed! Dr. Haynes said if you
don't like the ads, that's good, because they are not targeted to you!
These images are what the TARGET groups picked out as being most
effective.
