An ad
showing a doctor and nurse and grandma mother all tossing a baby back and
forth could have been an equally vivid analogy of the risks that faces a
baby when not breastfeed, and who is responsible for those risks. How about
a mom in the middle of a circle of people (ala the game "monkey in the
middle"). She has her blouse half open and she is trying to breastfeeding
the baby, but others are repeatedly taking the baby away from her? That's
how I feel the situation is for a mom trying to breastfeed, these days.
Janice,
I think that is quite an interesting visual. I like your idea & hope that
someone runs with it. So many think they are doing the mom a big favor by caring
for her baby & letting her rest, when in fact they are interfering with the
mom's ability & desire to do the very best for her baby.
I am also discouraged with some of the scare tactics that some nurses use;
esp when it comes to "borderline" blood glucose levels. The moms & dads are
warned that if the baby's blood sugar falls below that magic number that we have
to start the series of 6 blood sugars all over again. Also, if it drops too far
below that magic number, they will have to start an IV & keep that baby in
the nursery! The conclusion being that breastfeeding may be a nice thing to do
for your baby & yourself, but don't deny your baby something that will keep
your baby healthy.
I would love to go to work just once & find that all the breastfed babies
have had nothing but their own mom's milk/colostrum.
How does that go? AAARRRGGG!!!
