In response to Debbie's question about visitors. We have visiting hours but
they are never enforced. We have visitors in and out from the time mom is
admitted, during labor, and postpartum. Moms and nurses alike frequently
comment that baby has not breastfed or did so for only a short time because
of visitors. Parents are very reluctant to send visitors away. It is a
problem that our hospital needs to deal with.

One father was good about turning vistors away, but the visitors had a hard
time understanding why they had to wait! Another father commented to me
that breastfeeding is very inconvenient because visitors have to wait!!

At a recent conference a study was quoted that stated on average moms have
47 interruptions in less than 24 hours and this does not include dad or
nursing staff!

We are hoping to encourage more skin-to-skin or at least more time for mom
to hold her own baby so we are looking at how to deal with these well-
meaning visitors. I am trying to come up with a cute poem or saying to post
on the patient door. We also plan to talk to parents about limiting
visitors and how to plan for that when we start our prental breastfeeding
classes.

Like Debbie, I would also be interested to know how other hospitals deal
with frequent visitors. Thanks.
