One guideline I heard that makes sense to me is that if the mom no longer
feels the effect of the alcohol, go ahead and nurse. If she still feels the
effects, use some expressed milk for this feeding and pump if she needs to
make her breasts comfortable or is concerned about her supply. As a
non-drinker, I don't know if this is effective or not. Does everyone feel
the same "effects"?
I do worry a little about the mom whose first question after delivery is,
"How soon can I have a drink?" and then "Is it OK to have a drink when I'm
nursing?" She will report she has abstained during the pregnancy but has
"missed it".
