I just wrote a review for Amazon on the book we have been discussing
from the Today show by Cara Familian Natterson: "Your Newborn: Head to
Toe: Everything You Want to Know About Your Baby's Health Through the
First Year". I thought some people would like to see what I wrote.

Incorrect and misleading breastfeeding information, August 3, 2004

Reviewer: K. Tier (Near San Francisco USA)

I was forced to give this book only 1 star because of the incorrect and
misleading information regarding breastfeeding and infant nutrition. I
am a volunteer breastfeeding counselor and believe that if a mother
desires to breastfeed and follows the information listed in this book,
she stands a high probability of having problems related to nipple
confusion and low milk supply. Some statements made by the author are
blatently false and have been disproven by many published studies.
Specifically, she says that formula and breastmilk are identical except
for the antibodies in breastmilk and that if a woman does not
breastfeed immediately, she will not be able to breastfeed. Any medical
professional who writes a book covering infant nutrition should have
their information double-checked through a Board Certified Lactation
Consultant (IBCLC) for accuracy. Any pediatrician and member of the
American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) should consult with the board's
own Breastfeeding committee. The information in this book, in my
opinion, is not in compliance with the AAP's statement on infant
nutrition. If you are interested in other books available through
Amazon with accurate breastfeeding information, may I suggest: "The
Womanly Art of Breastfeeding" by La Leche League (revised 2004),
"Bestfeeding: How to Breastfeed Your Baby" by Mary Renfrew et al
(revised 2004), and "The Ultimate Breastfeeding Book of Answers" by Dr.
Jack Newman (2000).
