The FDA
states, "Based on the information provided by Nestle, as well as other
information
available to FDA , the agency has no questions at this time regarding
Nestle's
conclusion that B. lactis strain Bb12 and S. thermophilus strain Th4 are GRAS
for their intended use as ingredients in milk-based infant formula that is
intended for consumption by infants four months and older at levels not to
exceed good manufacturing practice."
Ah another slippery slope Valerie points out. So, this makes it sound like
the FDA is saying the Nestle only intends this to be marketed to babies 4
months and older. This of course backslides quietly the whole push by intelligent
health agencies to move to the exclusivity for
"6 Months" guideline, and away from the old 4-6. Gotta hand it to Nestle,
they are quite good at undermining any move that might cut into profits. And
how would they actually make sure this stuff didn't get into the guts of babies
under 4 months, just like their jarred foods are fed to 3 month olds...
Sigh.
