Dear Linda,
I am also an LLL Leader. You asked which books to purchase. I recommend the most recent edition of the BAB as it is much more up to date than past editions. I also like Auerbach and Riodan's book (and it is supposed to be recently revised and out for sale). I like Hale's book, Medications and Mother's Milk, 2004 edition. I would also suggest Linda Smith's book, The LC in Private Practice. Even if you don't plan to do private practice, it is helpful in learning about the standards of practice necessary for this profession and will help you transition from volunteer to professional.
Also, print out and read over the Code of Ethics and Clinical Competancies from IBLCE's web site. Print and read the Standards of Practice from ILCA's web site. Join ILCA and start getting the Journal of Human Lactation.
Do home visits as an LLL Leader -- try for one every week. Try to shadow someone who works with new babies so you learn how to work with the typical sleepy (drugged) baby that is so common now days. Find a mentor IBCLC who has a reputation for excellance and learn from her.
Attend the higher level IBCLC conferences offered in your area so you learn more.
This is an expensive profession to be in and there is no way to cut costs without short changing yourself, your future clients, and the rest of the profession. Think of this as your training for a job. You would be spending money on college tuition or textbooks. Training to be IBCLC is the same.
I would be happy to email with you privately if you want. LLLove, Kathy Eng, BSW, IBCLC, LLL Leader in Houston, TX
