So many of you have offered excellent ideas and I will use them all.
Lactnet is such a great sounding board!
Birth control: haven't asked but I will. Good point.
Thumb sucking: I saw finger chewing / gnawing, but will ask about sucking.
Low supply: baby had been sleeping many hours at night which mom thought
was great, followed by intro of baby foods & cereal. The pitstop nursing (&
pushing into the breast with his head) could be baby's attempt to bring on
a letdown. I'm not sure which came first, solid foods or night waking. Will
find out.
Will print out Dr. Newman's info sheets - all that apply to the situation.
4 hour time frame for nursing: My meaning was that every time baby wants to
nurse over a 4 hour period should be at breast A, followed by all nursings
at breast B for the subsequent 4 hours. Objective was to thoroughly drain
the breast to increase production. I did not instruct mom to space out
breastfeeds to 4 hours apart. Sorry for not wording that well. Now I see
that it's probably more appropriate for this age (6 m.o. instead of
newborn)and situation to suggest switch feeding instead: swap breasts
frequently to help build supply. Should be easy with baby's pitstop
feeding. Excess foremilk is not a factor in this instance.
And yes, he does bite on occasion. Probably more a teething issue than a
supply issue. I did explain about latching properly w/tongue down. Tongue
extended down = comfortable nursing. Tongue disappears = mom at risk for
being bitten.
