Mothering Magazine had an article in the Jan-Feb 1998 issue (No. 86)
titled "Nursery? Not! A Myth-Busting, Real-Mother Layette List" by
Heather Henderson.
The things she says you probably won't need include: a nursery, a
crib, a baby bath ("your body is a nonslip safety device"), a
playpen, sleepers ("intended for babies who sleep alone"), pacifiers,
and baby food/mini food grinder.
The list she wishes she'd had to begin with includes: phone numbers
of local LC and/or LLLL, cordless phone, several months of diaper
service, and extra (adult bed) bedding.
(This article appeared shortly before the birth of my first child,
and saved me from a number of needless purchases! I've always
remembered it.)
