Query for an LC colleague: how much is too much Vit B6 in prenatal vitamins
when mom continues taking them during lactation?
My colleague has two clients who had troubles with milk supply. After much
detective work starting with the usual and the obvious, she found that both
were taking the same prenatals: StuartNatal Duet. They have 25 mg of B6 and
they were developed to help control nausea in early pregnancy. Both women
were still taking these vitamins after baby was born and both women were
having supply issues. I saw in the company web site that Duet is also made
with DHA. My colleague did not mention this version, so I can't say if they
were taking that version of Duet.
Note: this is NOT to say anything negative about this brand of vitamins
when used as described by the mfg: during pregnancy. I'm just questioning
if there is a relationship between this level of B6 in this, and possibly
in other brands, and milk supply issues.
The RDA for non-pregnant people is 2mg per day in the US. Hale lists a
massive dose of 600 mg can stop lactation.
Thanks
Phyllis
