I've spent some time helping a woman relactate in anticipation of a year
long stint at an orphanage in Ghana, Africa. It seems, babies are dying
from lack of formula on a regular basis there and she was hoping to donate
her milk. Before departure she was getting around 8-10 oz/day with the
hopes of getting a baby latched on soon after her arrival at the
orphanage. It turns out within two hours after being picked up at the
airport they had stopped to pick up an abandoned one week old baby at a
women's clinic who hadn't eaten in 6 hours. She latched the baby on and
then later used an SNS to supplement the baby. She has a Lactina pump and
will continue to pump and latch babies on occasionally. It's quite a
novelty at the orphanage to see the "white woman" nurse the babes!! Seems
the milk is flowing now.

My question is this...what are the risks of a non HIV positive woman
getting HIV from a positive baby nursing at her breast? My recommendation
was to only nurse babies from non positive mothers but I pose the question
to you all. What do you think? I doubt there is any evidence based
studies on this one. If anyone has heard anything please let me know.
