I have been reading LACTNET messages for several years and don't
remember this topic covered. Our local hospital has a high level of
inductions and IV use. Does anyone know the effects of extra fluid from
inductions and/or IV use on the birth weight of the infant? Due to
extra fluid in the mother's system, breastfeeding does not always get
off to a good start, but the bigger problem I'm seeing is that a baby
might be given formula to supplement feeding because the baby has lost
more than 10 % body weight - often as soon as the second day after
birth, or 24 to 36 hours post birth. Is there a connection here? One
such mother had been nursing her baby fairly often but still was told
she should supplement due to weight loss. Thanks for any light someone
might bring to this topic. Nancy Heyns, RN, IBCLC in Public Health
