My question is this:
Ethically, can/should a NON-IBCLC meet with a patient for a "Lactation
Consult".
As a breastfeeding-knowledgeable MD, I expect a "consult" to be done by an
IBCLC, but basic teaching could be done by a non-IBCLC (who is generally
supervised by an IBCLC). I expect most MDs do not know the difference, however. It
is up to all of us to educate our physician colleagues.
A COOL NOTE: I was at a local AAP Board meeting tonight and one of the
Pediatricians saw my business card and asked me how she could become IBCLC
certified as well!
