OK, I'll jump in with a few words about the conference since I haven't
seen anyone else do it. I think one of the favorite speakers was Miriam
Labbok. She is a physician with UNICEF and spoke at two plenary
sessions and one breakout. Word of warning, though. Don't go looking
in the syllabus for her outlines because she brought handouts for all of
hers. There was only a summary page in the syllabus. She spoke on the
Immunological Secrets of Breastfeeding and Implications for Best
Practice, Implementing the Global Strategy and the breakout was The
Lifecycle of Women's Fertility. The first two were especially good as
was the Immunology plenary session by Lars Hansen. Of course, Jim
McKenna is always a favorite and one of the most informative to me was
the DHA session by JHL editor M. Jane Heinig. Also the 3 Step
counseling session by Cathy Carrothers. I heard great things about the
Ad campaign sessions though I did not attend them. I heard great things
about several I wish I had attended because I wasn't thrilled with the
ones I did attend. I guess I was a little "off" in picking this year.
Since you didn't have to sign up ahead of time, I was sometimes left
frantically looking at the list and deciding on a topic either because I
was close to the room or it (the session) wasn't full or my finger
landed on it on the page or... well you get the picture! I (or the
process) wasn't very organized this year. I think the plenary sessions
were by far my favorite. As always, the conference was refreshing. And
I will carry the image in my mind for a long time of a poor shuttle
driver (male) listening to 7 women chattering about breastfeeding things
then focusing their collective attention on him and asking about his
children...! (He had 3 boys and no, his wife wasn't successful
breastfeeding any of them! ;-)
