Here's a little more to add to the discussion.

Your mom needing gall bladder surgery needs to talk to someone with a
copy of Dr. Hale's Medication and Mothers' Milk.  For some reason
postpartum moms are especially prone to gall bladder problems and
sometimes need surgery.  BUT...................the info about not being
able to nurse for ???? period of time is WRONG.  I have counseled several
moms who have had this surgery on an outpatient basis.  The first thing I
encourage them to do is find out from their doctor who the specific
anesthesiologist is that will be used, and then personally call the
anesthesiologist.  Let the anes. know how important breastfeeding is to
her baby and then ask the specific meds that will be used.  Then have
them checked in Dr. Hale's book.  One of the moms I worked with was told
that she couldn't breastfeed her baby for 2-10 days (depending on which
doc she talked to).  When she was able to find out the specific meds,
according to Hale the one that stayed in her system the longest was 4
HOURS.  She was able to breastfeed as soon as she returned home (course
she didn't feel wonderful after surgery), but at least she could feed her
baby.

Hope you can give mom the CORRECT information that she needs or refer her
to someone else who can.
