>>Dr. Lewis Coffin, author of THE GRANDMOTHER
CONSPIRACY EXPOSED, SAYS:
"It has been found that babies who become fat while
being breastfed do
not develop the same problems as do babies who are
getting solid food
or
formula. Far babies who are breastfed only don't
apparently add on
abnormal fat cells, the just enlarge or fill those
they normally have."<<
I have also read similar information. The population
I worked with in Alaska--Native Alaskans (Yupik
eskimo, Native Americans, Aleuts). The infants would
tend towards obesity in infancy then slim out as they
reached toddlerhood. Other research indicates that
obesity in breastfed infants is *not* predictive of
obesity in later life. It is more closely linked with
maternal obesity. Obesity in early childhood (age
3-5) is more closely predictive.
Anecdotally, in our family, morbid obesity is rampant
on both sides of the family through a long period of
history. The children who were breastfed the longest
in time & longest in exclusivity have the lowest BMI's
although some have weight issues. The only child with
morbid obesity in the newest generation was breastfed
for only 6 weeks with abrupt weaning to formula.
Switching to formula or tinkering with the
breastfeeding relationship would only add to potential
problems with feeding & weight gain as the infant
would feed for longer periods of time & take in more
calories & fluid--that vicious cycle. Nevermind the
decreased maternal-infant contact that would also
come.
Here's one link through a google search this morning:
http://health.discovery.com/centers/pregnancy/breastfeed.html
Quite a few links came up with the search terms
"breastfeed" and "obesity" and "infant", but I didn't
look through them all.
